Dr. Rajesh Majumdar-Chowdhury

Dr Rajesh Majumdar-Chowdhury has 23 years of experience in ophthalmology of which about 12 years have been in United Kingdom.

After completing his DOMS course from Aligarh Muslim University he worked as a Registrar in the department of Ophthalmology at the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan Hospital in Kolkata.

After spending about18 months in this job he moved to UK for further experience and qualification. In UK, he obtained the MRCophth from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of London and the FRCS from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Subsequently, he completed his clinical training from the North West Deanery in the Manchester region in UK.

He was also privileged enough to receive a fellowship training in the discipline of Ophthalmic Plastic and Orbital Surgery in the department of Corneoplastic at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, UK.

Eventually, Dr Majumdar- Chowdhury started working as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Great Western Hospital NHS trust at Swindon in Wiltshire. In this post he provided oculoplastic care to a population of about 350000 residing in the town of Swindon and in the surrounding villages of North Wiltshire.

He came back to India in early 2009 and joined Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata as a Senior Consultant in the department of Oculoplasty.

As a Senior Consultant in Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata, between April 2009 till March 2012, he provided oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery cover in this hospital with a monthly through put of around 9000 patients.

Dr Majumdar Chowdhury is a competent cataract surgeon but his forte and passion is definitely treating patients with various types of orbital, lacrimal and ocular plastics problems.

He works as a part of a multi-speciality team to manage patients with serious orbitofacial and orbitocranial problems from all over Eastern India, Bangladesh, Nepal and sometimes even beyond.

He has maintained his link with UK and he works for a month every year as Locum Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in various NHS Trusts.

Dr Majumdar-Chowdhury keeps himself academically up to date by participating in significant number of ophthalmic and oculoplastic conferences at local, National and International levels as an invited speaker and faculty.

He takes part in workshops in his field of work and regularly spends few weeks in the year observing other senior practitioners of his craft.

He practices Evidence Based Medicine and regularly audits his surgical cases.

He is a keen trekker and has hiked extensively in the hills and mountains of UK, Continental Europe and India.
