Dr. Lav Kochgaway

Previously the Assistant Medical Director of Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. Lav Kochgaway is an extremely knowledgeable, senior clinician and a surgeon par excellence with more than 20 years of experience in the field of ophthalmology. Dr Kochgaway after leaving Sankara Nethralaya, started his practice at B B Eye Foundation, Kolkata as Senior Consultant – Pediatric, Cataract, Squint & Neuro-ophthalmology. Currently, he is Director – B B Eye Foundation VIP & Netralayam Eye Care Centre Pvt. Ltd.

After completing his Masters of Surgery (Ophthalmology) from Patna University (PMCH), Dr. Kochgaway joined fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the prestigious Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai where he trained under the great teachers of Ophthalmology like Dr. T.S. Surendran who have trained some of the biggest names in Ophthalmology today. Dr Kochgaway was the first candidate to join the reputed Sankara Nethralaya-Orbis Pediatric Ophthalmology Training and Learning Centre as Fellow. Dr. Kochgaway was judged the Best Outgoing Fellow of his time.

During his decade long association with Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. Kochgaway proved his leadership skill, first as a clinician by building of the Pediatric Ophthal Dept. and also as a leading Anterior segment surgeon, handling all complicated cases at the time of Sankara Nethralaya setting up its own hospital in Kolkata in 2007. He stood with the management and was one of the responsible person in setting up of the Sankara Nethralaya hospital in Kolkata with extremely difficult timelines to build up the set up. This shows his commitment attitude towards his work.

Dr. Kochgaway always believes in upgrading knowledge and so he is very much involved in academic activities. He is also a major contributor to various national & international journals. He has many published articles in the field of Pediatric Cataract.

He has been honored and awarded many times for his best videos and posters in the conferences at national and international levels. Some of them are, The Grand Prize for Overall Best Video at Annual Conference of Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons at Jaipur, 2014 and Best Video at the renowned Challenging Cases Symposium in ESCRS, London in 2014 – My First Encounter with a World So Dark.

Though Dr. Kochgaway is very proficient in all types of Ophthalmic surgeries, his areas of expertise are Adult & Pediatric Cataract, Squint, Ocular trauma & Lasik. He has performed more than 15000 complicated surgeries and one of the best Cataract Surgeon in the country.

Dr. Kochgaway is very popular in his peer group due to his helping nature and leadership quality. He is also cherised by his subordinates for standing behind them always when they need him.

His quality work and evidence based practice makes him popular amongst his patients and is a much loved doctor and a favourite of his patients.
